Heavy Rainfall Hits Southern Ontario: Toronto and Surrounding Areas Under Warning

A powerful storm system is bringing significant rainfall to much of southern Ontario, prompting Environment Canada to issue a rainfall warning for the region, including Toronto and its surrounding areas. The warning, which was issued early Sunday morning, advises residents to prepare for a prolonged period of heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding and other hazards.

According to Environment Canada, the rain is expected to be heaviest in the late morning and early afternoon, with totals reaching up to 40 mm in some areas. The rain is expected to taper off by the evening, but not before causing potentially hazardous conditions on roads and sidewalks.

Residents of Toronto and surrounding areas are advised to exercise caution when traveling and to avoid areas that are prone to flooding. The city’s stormwater management systems are designed to handle heavy rainfall, but excessive rain can still cause flooding in low-lying areas.

The rainfall warning is also affecting other parts of southern Ontario, including the GTA, Hamilton, and the Niagara Region. Residents in these areas are advised to check the Environment Canada website for the latest updates and to follow the instructions of local authorities.

In addition to the rainfall warning, Environment Canada has also issued a wind warning for some areas, with gusts expected to reach up to 80 km/h. This could lead to power outages and property damage, particularly in areas with loose outdoor objects.

Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. The city’s emergency services are on standby and ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise.

The rainfall warning is expected to be lifted by Sunday evening, but residents are advised to remain vigilant and to continue monitoring the weather forecast for updates.
