Manchester United did a painfully good job of making Ruben Amorim and Ruben Fernandes’ point for them yet again, as Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a stunning late hat-trick and secure a 3-1 win over Southampton.
The Red Devils had been struggling to break down the Saints’ defense for much of the game, with the visitors taking a surprise lead through a well-taken goal from Armando Broja. United’s attacking woes seemed to be continuing, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial failing to make an impact.
However, the introduction of Diallo in the 65th minute proved to be the turning point in the game. The young winger brought a much-needed injection of pace and energy to the United attack, and he quickly set about making his mark on the game.
Diallo’s first goal came in the 75th minute, as he latched onto a through ball from Bruno Fernandes and slotted past the Southampton goalkeeper. The Ivorian winger then doubled his tally just five minutes later, as he curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.
But Diallo wasn’t finished yet. In the 90th minute, he sealed his hat-trick with a stunning individual effort, beating several Southampton defenders before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. The goal sent the Old Trafford faithful into raptures, and capped off an incredible comeback from the Red Devils.
The win moves United up to third in the Premier League table, and will come as a huge relief to manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman had been under pressure after a string of disappointing results, but the victory over Southampton will give him and his team a much-needed boost of confidence.
As for Diallo, his hat-trick heroics will have done his chances of starting for United no harm. The young winger has been impressing in training and in the Europa League, and his performance against Southampton will have given ten Hag food for thought ahead of the team’s next game.
